The ancient world comes to life in the first volume in a two book series on the history of Egypt, spanning the first farmers to the construction of the pyramids. Immersing the reader in the Egypt of the past, Romer examines and challenges the long-held theories about what archaeological finds mean and what stories they tell about how the Egyptians lived.

This book fills that gap. It is focused on what archaeological evidence exists for preliterate and very early Pharaonic Egypt up to the construction of Khufu's Great Pyramid at Giza, 100 free dating farmers. Being a relatively new book, 100 free dating farmers, it covers excavations up to the early s, which is a nice thing. Romer's stated methodology is to present the archaeology without speculating beyond the actual artifacts, a goal speed dating eure mostly succeeds in.
However, Romer has a bit of a Postmodern bent, and thus can take things a bit too far. As an example, I will discuss his discussion of Narmer, one of the first kings of Egypt. Narmer is often associated with Menes, who is listed as the first Pharaoh in most king lists from Ptolemaic times on.
Menes is said to have unified the two kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt. There exists a famous artifact, the Narmer Palette, which depicts King Narmer, in what became one of the classic poses of Ancient Egyptian iconography, holding a bound prisoner by the hair in one hand and holding a mace in his raised other hand, preparing to smite the victim.
In addition, there are scenes of conquest, bound, decapitated, and castrated prisoners, and images of Narmer wearing the White Crown later associated with Upper Egypt and in others, he wears the Red Crown, later associated with Lower Egypt.
The traditional interpretation of this object is that it commemorates Narmer's who is typically presented as a ruler of Upper Egypt military campaign of conquest over Lower Egypt. Romer argues that there is no extant evidence of widespread warfare dating to the era of Narmer this despite graves containing bodies of people who obviously died violent deaths, such as being maced, scalped, beheaded, etc.
The book has a considerable implication that any kind of interpretation is a vestige of Western Colonialism. In sum, the book is a very good summary of the archaeology of a period that is not well covered in the non-specialist press, and it is at its best when the author avoids injecting his philosophical leanings into the book.
Fortunately, while they are present, they don't overwhelm the presentation of the archaeology, so it's still a welcome addition to the popular literature on ancient Egypt. History is my favorite subject. Ancient Egypt is my favorite part of history. John Romer has for a long time been my favorite authority on Ancient Egypt.
In he announced that he was close to discovering the tomb of Herihor. I wish he would give us an update! Anyways, he fails to disappoint in this volume and I look forward to the next. Admittedly he is pretty wordy when it comes to this volume. And he tends towards educating about cultural anthropology rather than historical narrative per se. Yet he stays true to his vision that, in order to more completely understand Egypt one needs to maximize ones sense of what it was like way back then and get rid of modern illusions.
In my opinion this is particularly important when it comes to Egypt's beginnings. Here Professor Romer takes pains to describe how its people slowly coalesced into a state, yet in a way that actually doesn't make good sense relative to modern notions of cultural evolution. Why not write the book that way, especially when there is not much surviving quantitative data on dynasties one through three anyways?
Similarly, I can surely appreciate complaints that he did not spend much time on the topic of pyramids in dynasties three and four before he closed the book. I think he could have gone on for another or so pages. Pyramids are the fun stuff when it comes to the time period he reviews, admittedly. But again, Romer has nonetheless done the Field, in his dedicated, disciplined fashion, a singular service in illustrating for the first time that I know of how it probably "really was", how the incredible story of Egypt really began.
I was looking for a reasonably concise history of one of the longest-lived of ancient civilisations, but there are some limitations, unfortunately. The period from the fun dating tips days is of course 100 free dating farmers in written records, and has left only limited traces apart from pottery, making a true history almost impossible to achieve.
Added to this, the depredations of later peoples, and it must be said, early archaeologists, have destroyed much of what they left behind. That means this book is essentially a history of the archaeology of ancient Egypt, as undertaken mainly in in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
However that does not make this a bad book. It is carefully written, and very interesting. It is sometimes short on detail, and some carbon dating comic would help. There are frequent maps, for example, but when repeated as they are at intervals, it would be useful if the sites being discussed in the section of the book should all be shown, without having to flip back to find them in another map.
I suppose my main grumble would be the lack of pictures. There are many drawings, both of archaeological works and of objects, but more colour photographs, even at the expense of extra pages in an already large book, would be most welcome. Even with these quibbles, it does make for a very good background on ancient Egypt, and I will need to re-read it from the beginning having now read volume 2 to truly pick up on all the information it contains.
One person found this helpful. Romer's approach to pre-dynastic Egypt is scrupulously objective. At every stage in his narrative, he explicitly informs his reader of the limits of the archaeological and textual evidence, and reveals tendencies on the dating same sign of past egyptologists to conjecture on the basis of inadequate evidence and their own cultural biases.
If a revised edition of this book is published, I would like to see Dr. Romer address the iconography of the petroglyphs being cataloged in the eastern desert of Egypt and recent speculations about the semi-pastoral top dating sites in ct of the pre-dynastic peoples who finally settled in the Valley of the Nile and became agriculturalists.
This book is very well-written, and I am looking forward to reading Dr. Romer's next volume on the history of ancient Egypt. See all 33 reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 4 months ago.
